Digital Reader 1000 series

The new Digital Reader DR1000S
The latest addition to our range of digital reading solutions is the large format Digital Reader. This new platform is the DR1000S which offers business users the opportunity to display A4 PDF on a 10 inch display – giving almost 1 : 1 reproduction, and the DR1000S allows the user make notes on screen.
Using the extraordinary Electrophoretic Display (EPD) also known as e-ink http://www.eink.com/technology/howitworks.html, the DR1000S offers a large format lightweight portable reading to device. The business professional now has the capability to carry an archive of documents to read, review and annotate wherever they wish.
The 1 GB SD memory is replaceable with larger capacity SD cards giving the user the ability to carry and display as much information as they wish.
Reading documents on an e-Reader rather than printing them on paper has some significant cost and environmental savings.
To establish the cost of printing a sheet of A4, many factors have to be considered in addition to the paper cost. The power to run the printer, toner or ink cartridges, the capital cost of the printer, maintenance, clerical time and possibly postage have to be taken into consideration. Shredding and disposal may also need to be included. Clearly the cost of printing a sheet of A4 paper varies from organisation to organisation. Calculation of the cost per printed sheet enables the potential savings from using e-Readers to be estimated.
A document management company in the UK quote between 1p and 15p per sheet. Many County Councils estimate that their cost of printing is between 8 and 12 pence per sheet.
A study in a UK retail bank showed that on average an employee would print 1000 sheets of A4 a month. Investment bankers can treble that consumption.
A study in the USA shows that a clerical worker will print ten thousand sheets of paper a year and a study in The Netherlands show that the average annual paper consumption for a lawyer is thirty thousand sheets.
In the USA eighty percent of printed documents are shredded within ten days.
To display a page rather than printing on paper results in a 99% reduction of CO2 emitted. This calculation was agreed with The Carbon Trust and is available if you wish to see for yourself.
An independent Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) has been conducted for the DR 1000S using
– CMLCA
• Chain Management by Life Cycle Assessment, version5.1
• Institute of Environmental Sciences, 2008
– Ecoinvent Database 2.0
• Swiss Centre for Life Cycle Inventories, 2007
The DR 1000 is carbon neutral after displaying 5000 pages that would otherwise have been printed. The conclusion is that there is “Strong evidence that the iRex DR1000 is a sound alternative to regular office paper use”
