The title is a little misleading. Advanced Course. Yes, perhaps it is, but all the same it is not difficult to understand. Do not be put off by the thought that this is going to be a book written in some mysterious language, dealing with people navel gazing. It is not. The author was actually an American from Baltimore, who wrote under many different names. He apparently gained his knowledge from an Indian Yogi, but had the mentality of a Westerner. This book was written 100 years ago, but stands the test of time without fault. What was true of this book 100 years ago, is still true.
Off and on for the past 40 years I have been reading books on philosophy, the meaning of life, religion, ethics, and so on. I have never read a better book on these subjects than this one. Yogi Philosophy, gives the best explanations for "what is the meaning of life" of anything I have ever read. And yet it is not difficult to grasp most of the issues. As the book explains we travel in a spiral, so at each loop we gain new understanding of the same explanations. You will understand it the first time you read it, the second time you will understand it, but at another level.
In the first part of this book Ramacharaka expounds on the occult masterpiece "Light on the Path". There is no better explanation anywhere. If you were only to read this, it would be worth the price of the book. There is a companion book by Ramacharaka, "Fourteen Lessons in Yogi Philosophy". It is not necessary to read that book first, but it is certainly something that should be read. Read this first, and you will get the big picture.
Maybe not everyone will love it, if your mind is firmly closed, don't bother. When I first read it, I was 15 years old, and a committed Christian. After reading 15 pages, I thought that it was sacrilegious and I should burn it. After reading 100 pages, I was no longer a Christian; I had embarked on a journey to another land. I have never looked back.
